Torah Mantle Thumbnail
Textile Art

In 2001 I made my first foray into quilt art with this very special commission, a Torah cover for Keddem Congregation in Palo Alto, CA, in honor of the birth of a member's grandson.

The six-pointed starburst evokes both the Magen David (six-pointed star of Jewish symbolism), and the burst of energy during the creation of the universe. Energy radiates out from the starburst in a spiral, representing the passage of time and the spiral of life.

The golden Hebrew calligraphy spelsl out L'dor vador hallelujah (from generation to generation, hallelujah), an entirely appropriate sentiment for a piece intended for use in a synagogue, and created to honor the birth of a new family member.

The mantle was pieced from hand-painted silk (the blue/green/violet fabric was white before I got my hands on it) and machine quilted; the calligraphy and starburst were machine appliqued with metallic threads. One feature that is not readily apparent in this photo is that it was created with a removable skirt for easy cleaning.

If you have a textile - or calligraphy - project you would like to discuss, send me an email at info@mddesignworks.com.
