Wedding Roundel

approx 20" x 20"
Calligraphy lettered with watercolor and steel pens; collage, gold leaf

"Be thou consecrated unto me. I am my beloved's and my beloved and mine." These words, in both English and Hebrew calligraphy, circle a gilded sun/moon. Ribbon-entwined vines, forming a shape reminiscent of a Jewish star, wind around the circle, with orchids, lilies and tulips. White gold gilded stars glitter in space, two doves fly toward one another, and tiny symbolic objects hide among the vines.

This calligraphy collage was commissioned by a bride as a gift to her groom. It can be seen in Wedding Invitations, Announcements, Placecards and More: A Bride's Guide to Simple Calligraphy, by Bette Matthews (Rockport Publishers, 2001).

I calligraphed the English and Hebrew lettering with several tints of blue and green watercolor. The border is a collage of papers I hand-painted to achieve the precise colors I wanted. The moon/sun and stars are genuine yellow and white gold leaf.
